Overview

The A220 was designed for the capacity gap between regional aircraft and conventional narrow-bodies. That gap stayed empty for a long time because lowering seat-mile cost in a small aircraft is hard.

A five-abreast cabin produces an unequal arrangement either side of the aisle. That widens seats while removing the middle-seat problem — a frequently cited example of how experience can be rescued in a small cabin.

The aircraft's origin lies in another manufacturer's programme and later changed hands. In aviation, a programme's owner and its engineering coming from different places is a structural consequence of the industry's economies of scale.
