Overview
The R 1300 GS is an adventure motorcycle designed for long distances and mixed surfaces. The type is defined by a compromise: long suspension travel and a tall riding position help on dirt roads but keep seat height out of reach for some riders.
In a boxer engine layout the cylinders sit out to the sides. That lowers the centre of gravity and eases cooling, while the cylinders protruding outward become a constraint in tight passages.
In touring motorcycles the equipment debate has moved to electronics: riding modes, traction control and semi-active suspension. These extend the same capability to a wider range of riders more than they extend the machine's capability itself.
