Bodrum Gulet
A traditional wooden sailing vessel that turned from a fishing boat into a tourism vessel.
Overview
A gulet is a wooden, broad-sterned vessel developed along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. Its origins lie in sponge diving and cargo carrying; it took its present form under tourism demand.
That shift changed the design too: deck area widened, cabin count rose, the sail plan simplified and the auxiliary engine came to the fore. The type is a good example of vehicles that evolve with their use.
Wooden boatbuilding rests on a craft tradition more than on drawings. In the yards around Bodrum, form is transmitted largely through accumulated experience rather than scaled plans — a kind of knowledge that is not easy to preserve.
