TI-class ULCC
A very large crude carrier: a liquid cargo separates ship design entirely from container practice.
Overview
TI Europe belongs to the very large crude carrier class. Liquid cargo poses a different engineering problem than solid cargo: it moves as the ship moves and changes stability moment by moment.
The answer is subdivision. Splitting cargo into separate tanks limits the free surface effect, and a double hull delays cargo reaching the sea when the outer shell is breached — a regulation that arrived after accidents.
At this scale, manoeuvring is measured in kilometres rather than minutes. Stopping distance and turning radius are the real constraints that shape route planning and strait transits.
