The Mustang is a coupé defined by its long-bonnet, short-deck proportion. That proportion is not a functional necessity but a formal decision: to state the car's promise at first glance.
Its historical significance lies in bringing performance within reach of price. Imitating the character of expensive sports cars using mass-production parts created an entirely new group of buyers and gave the class its name.
The coupé body, with two doors and a low roofline, makes rear-seat access awkward. That is a deliberate sacrifice of practicality; usefulness was never the reason this class exists.
