Ford Ranger
An open-bed passenger pickup: an example of how the line between work vehicle and family car blurred.
Overview
The Ranger applies the pickup layout — a cab separate from a load bed — to a mid-size body. That separation makes it possible to carry dirty or long loads without bringing them into the cabin: van logic transplanted into a passenger vehicle.
The class changed in recent years as cab equipment rose to passenger-car standards. The same vehicle can go to a site on weekdays and take a family away at the weekend, and that duality often drives the purchase decision.
A pickup's characteristic difficulty is that the rear axle stays light when the bed is empty. Suspension tuning is a compromise between laden and unladen states, and that compromise explains why the ride feel is specific to the category.
