Ford Transit
A light commercial van whose name came to describe the vehicle type itself in several languages.
Overview
The Transit is one of the longest-running models in the light commercial class. In the 1960s, when European countries each built their own small vans, it tested the idea of a common vehicle for the continent.
Success in this class is measured by the number of body variants: short and long wheelbases, different roof heights, chassis cab. The same basic vehicle turns into dozens of forms according to the buyer's work.
The model's name eventually became the name of a type. A product becoming synonymous with its category is the result of ubiquity and longevity more than marketing.
