A ship where wheeled cargo drives aboard under its own power: a logistics built on ramps rather than cranes.
Overview
Ro-Ro is short for "roll-on/roll-off": cargo is not lifted by crane but driven aboard on its wheels. It is the backbone of shipping cars, trucks and construction machinery.
The method shortens loading time but requires large, undivided decks inside the ship. A wide open deck, if it takes on water, degrades stability quickly through the free surface effect; the safety history of Ro-Ro ships has been shaped by that risk.
Ramp design and deck heights determine which vehicles can be carried. Ro-Ro logistics is a system designed together with the port more than with the ship.
