An ordinary compact body rebuilt around performance, known for pushing the limits of front-wheel drive.
Overview
Type R is Honda's name for its performance derivatives. On the Civic it means reworking chassis, suspension and engine without changing the body: the same doors, the same boot, an entirely different character.
In a front-wheel-drive car, high power asks the same wheels to both pull and steer. That is the classic problem of the class, and the answer is mechanical: a limited-slip differential, suspension geometry and body stiffness work together.
The model draws attention because it never gives up everyday usability. A track-focused setup usually becomes unlivable in town; the balance struck here explains why the car has built a subculture around it.
