Overview
Icon of the Seas represents the current scale of the cruise class. On such ships the destination is not the sole purpose; the vessel is a hospitality and entertainment resort that happens to float.
At this size the engineering problem is stability rather than weight. Broad open areas on upper decks raise the centre of gravity, and hull beam, ballast arrangement and stabilisers work together to offset that rise.
What makes cruise ships contentious is that they carry the population of a small town. Waste management, energy use and the carrying capacity of the ports they visit are discussed more than the ship's technical specifications.
