Overview
A tractor is not a vehicle in itself but a power source. The power take-off and hydraulic couplings drive a plough, a harvester head or a pump attached behind; its value lies in the equipment it operates rather than the load it pulls.
Large rear wheels at low tyre pressure exist to reduce soil compaction. Compacted soil holds less water and yields less, so tyre choice in farming is a question of agronomy as much as engineering.
Position-based automatic steering has become common in modern tractors. Following the same track saves fuel and fertiliser; agricultural machinery is one of the vehicle classes where software settled in most quietly.
