Overview
Triple-E is a container ship class named after three design priorities: economy of scale, energy efficiency and environmental improvement. That trio captures the link between making a ship as large as possible and lowering fuel and emissions per container carried.
Container ships are built on the idea of moving standardised boxes between ports without repacking. That standard radically cut loading time and handling cost, shaping modern global trade; the ship itself is only one part of that system.
At this scale, design decisions extend to ports as well: berth depth, crane reach and terminal capacity determine which routes a ship can work. The larger the vessel, the fewer ports it can call at — the hidden cost of economy of scale.
