Overview

The S-Class defines the marque's upper-tier sedan. In the industry this class functions less as a showcase than as a laboratory: costly new systems are tried here first and descend to lower segments once mature.

Cabin quiet is a measurable engineering target in a luxury sedan. Glass thickness, seals, tyre sidewall construction and suspension mounting points all work together; it is never achieved by a single part.

A long wheelbase turns the rear seat into the car's main living space. Many customers in this class do not drive themselves — knowing which seat the design decisions were made for is the key to understanding the car.
