Overview
Roald Amundsen is an expedition ship designed to sail polar waters. What separates it from a conventional cruise liner is hull reinforcement and a choice of size: being small here is not a shortfall but the ability to enter narrow passages.
Hybrid propulsion allows short periods of electric sailing. Reducing noise and exhaust is a functional gain rather than a technical one on a voyage where wildlife observation is central.
Expedition tourism is itself contested: carrying visitors to a region meant to be protected creates a continuous tension between conservation and access. Ship design does not resolve that tension, only manages it.
