Q-Flex LNG Carrier
A liquefied natural gas carrier whose entire design is bound to insulation, keeping its cargo liquid.
Overview
Q-Flex is one of the large ship classes carrying liquefied natural gas. To shrink its volume, the cargo is held as a liquid at very low temperature, and keeping that temperature is the vessel's real engineering problem.
Tank insulation cannot be perfect, so part of the cargo evaporates during the voyage. Using that boil-off as fuel rather than venting it is an elegant solution that joins a loss to a need.
LNG shipping depends on terminals as much as on ships. Without liquefaction and regasification plants these vessels are useless; in energy logistics the vehicle is only one link in the chain.
