Polarstern

Overview
Polarstern is a research icebreaker working in polar regions. An icebreaker advances not by pushing ice aside but by riding onto it and breaking it with its weight, so its bow form and hull plating differ entirely from an ordinary ship's.
Its second function is as a laboratory. Sampling winches, wet lab spaces and the ability to stay at sea for long periods are designed so the vessel can carry its scientific programme.
Working in the polar regions means being self-sufficient for months. Planning fuel, food and spares is as decisive as the expedition's scientific goals; logistics here is not support work but the work itself.
