Renault Clio
A B-segment hatchback: one of Europe's longest-running attempts at liveability in a small body.
Overview
The Clio is a small-class hatchback shaped around Europe's dense urban fabric. In this class the real constraint on design is exterior size: parkability and manoeuvring in narrow streets come before cabin volume.
The way to gain interior space in a small body is packaging. A transverse engine, wheels pushed into the corners and a fuel tank tucked under the rear seat leave more living space within the same footprint.
Across a long life the model reached very different buyers through varying trim and engine levels. That the same body can be both a first car and a performance derivative is what explains the economics of this class.
