Overview

The R44 is a light, piston-engined helicopter with a four-seat cabin. Lower purchase and operating costs compared with turbine helicopters made it widespread in training, aerial filming and short-range transport.

Rotary wing establishes a different flight logic from fixed wing: because lift is generated independently of forward speed, hovering, departing from confined areas and landing vertically all become possible. The price is mechanical complexity and a continuous maintenance requirement.

In light helicopters of this kind, training and procedural discipline are decisive for flight safety. Engine-failure procedures such as autorotation sit at the centre of type training and require regular refreshing.
