Saab Seaeye ROV
A remotely operated underwater vehicle that solves the pressure problem by never sending a person.
Overview
An ROV is an uncrewed underwater vehicle connected by cable to a surface ship. The fundamental difference from crewed submersibles is that with no life compartment to withstand pressure, the design focuses purely on the task.
The cable carries both power and data and is also the vehicle's constraint: range is limited by its length and by the force currents apply to it. That is the trade between independence and endurance in underwater vehicles.
Work-class ROVs act through manipulator arms: turning valves, cutting, taking samples. Maintenance of offshore energy infrastructure runs largely on these machines.
