Scania R-series
A long-haul tractor built modularly: an industrial example of assembling very different vehicles from shared parts.
Overview
The R-series is a tractor unit built for long-distance haulage. The marque's notable approach is modularity: cab, engine and chassis components are chosen from a limited set of standard parts to produce many configurations.
For operators that translates into simplification in spares and maintenance training. A fleet can use different vehicles for different tasks while sharing one parts pool.
In heavy commercial vehicles, engine life is measured in operating hours rather than kilometres. That explains why the yardstick setting residual value in a purchase decision is different too.
