Overview

The Corolla has been in production since the 1960s, repeating the same promise across generations: not doing anything unexpected. It is the quality most underrated in motoring writing and most decisive in the market.

The model's engineering approach is built on delaying the unproven. A new technology usually arrives here after maturing in other models; the cost is lateness, the return is failure rate.

In recent generations a hybrid drivetrain moved to the centre of the model. Bringing in the electric motor around town lifts the combustion engine out of its least efficient range — an unassuming but measurable gain, in keeping with the Corolla's history.
