Volvo FH
A long-haul tractor unit, an early populariser of safety equipment in the heavy commercial class.
Overview
The FH is a tractor unit built for long-distance haulage. In this class the difference between manufacturers usually shows not in raw power but in how many hours a driver can spend without fatigue.
In heavy vehicles the consequences of a crash grow with mass. That is why systems such as lane keeping, emergency braking and rollover control spread here before passenger cars; the push came from insurance and fleet economics rather than regulation.
A tractor's economics are also built on aerodynamics. The gap between cab and trailer, cameras in place of mirrors and air deflectors all affect long-haul consumption directly — small percentages become large numbers at fleet scale.
