Zodiac RIB
A rigid inflatable boat whose lightness and buoyancy made it standard equipment for rescue crews.
Overview
A RIB consists of inflatable side tubes attached to a rigid hull. The rigid hull provides performance under way, while the tubes add buoyancy and impact protection without adding weight.
That combination makes the boat both fast and forgiving when coming alongside. It is why RIBs became common in rescue and diving operations: touching a rock or another boat is usually inconsequential for one.
Maintaining the tubes is a separate matter. Ultraviolet light and abrasion wear the fabric; these boats take their durability not from material alone but from regular upkeep.
